Just the tip of the windfarm iceberg

THANK you for highlighting the controversial windfarm debate as it relates to our local area; in particular the 'What's on the horizon' feature.
I believe the three proposals you mentioned to be just the tip of the iceberg as I have heard of further developments being mooted at Harrington, Sibbertoft and Yelvertoft.

The conclusion being that whole areas of beautiful countryside are under
threat from these monstrous machines.

There is no doubt that rural landscapes (a most precious resource, available to all to enjoy) are industrialised by the erection of wind turbines.

There is doubt however, and the battle rages, about how effective turbines are as a source of renewable energy.

Vast subsidies are being paid to the foreign generating companies who build them – they receive double the price for electricity produced from wind to that produced in any other way (we consumers are already funding this in our bills).

Landowners also benefit substantially in monetary terms. Small wonder applications are mushrooming – fuelled by big profits!

I suggest the subsidies be stopped until proper assessments are made into the effectiveness and desirability of onshore wind power – there are many instances of people's lives being severely disrupted by noise or flicker from turbines as they are built too close to dwellings.

Instead of making the potentially devastating mistake of building more and more wind 'factories', money should be channelled into research into other renewables such as solar heating – how much more sensible for each householder to produce their own electricity from 'state of the art' solar panels for instance?!

I can only hope that the increasing public outcry will cause the Government to stop and think, before it's too late for our countryside.

Anne Tilbrook,

High Street, Clipston.
