Near Coventry Road, estates urban sprawl,
Allotment greenery carbon emission nulls.

Partnership with nature helps clear the air,

Now concrete will cover happy hours shared.

The soil was nurtured over fifty years,

To a rich and enviable tilth helping to

Clear ex-servicemen’s heads of wartime fear,

Giving comfort when life was austere.

They fought for our freedom but,

Just when freedom was in their grasp,

They have it snatched away again.

Other allotments have been taken too,

Gardeners forced off by coeval foes,

Who have done more harm than

The wartime enemy could do.

An edict from the grandees says, the

Embattled planet must be saved,

Providing that it does not interfere

With our philistine developer friends.

John Wigley, Woodmarket, Lutterworth.
