ABOUT 100 people attended an event marking the opening of Hallaton Museum's new 'Rituals, Hoards and Helmets' exhibition.
The display tells the tale of The Hallaton Treasure – one of the most significant Iron Age and Roman finds in Europe – being discovered by walkers in a field near the village eight years ago.
It was declared open by Vicki Score, the archaeologist in charge of the excavations, during a ceremony at The Stenning Hall in the village recently.
When discovered in 2001, the site appeared to contain just Roman pottery but further digs unearthed about 5,500 coins, a rare Roman cavalry helmet, a silver bowl and other items.
Large numbers of pig bones were also found and experts believe the site was an important Iron Age religious centre.
Experts have hailed the find as one of the most significant ever made in Europe.
The museum is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays between 2.30 and 5pm.
