MORE cycle stands and better cycle lanes are needed in Harborough, according to cyclists in the town.
They are just two of the suggestions put to the new Market Harborough Cyclists' Group, which has been set up by Robin Totten, of Coventry Road, and Phil Clark, of Harrod Drive, following the Hands on Harborough conference.
Mr Totten and Mr Clark m
et on June 23 and now plan to canvass the opinions of residents who use or would like to use bicycles for travelling within town to work, schools, shops, and the bus and train stations and present a report to the county and district councils.
Over the next two months Mr Totten and Mr Clark will be identifying hazards across the town and Great Bowden and aim to complete a report by the end of November.
Comments received so far include: more and better cycle stands needed; High Street block paving is hazardous; old style chicanes are dangerous, particularly Welland Park Road and Western Avenue; co-ordination is needed between Millennium Way and new developments; discontinuance and variability of 'cycle lanes' is worse than none – they should be distinctively and consistently marked; motorists to be advised they are entering a cyclist friendly town.
The group also aims to recruit other volunteers who can provide information and support. Anyone who would like to get involved or comment should contact the group by email on robin.totten@
