ALTHOUGH not in the best of health, Peter Raven keeps his garden looking immaculate and beautiful all year round, says Marion Timms who nominated him for the best back garden award.
Peter (78) and wife Gloria moved to Holdenby Close, Harborough, from Cornwall in 2000, having also lived in South Africa and London.

The couple wanted to live between Shrewsbury and Peterborough to be near to their family and during their search came to Harborough.

They stopped for coffee in Emerson and Wests and visited the Cherry Tree pub in Little Bowden and found everyone so friendly.

Peter was also happy to find out Harborough had a golf course and that clinched it.

Over the years the couple have made some very good friends.

Celebrating 40 years of marriage this month, the couple spend a lot of time together in their small garden, with Gloria (64) deadheading the flowers and tidying up the edges of the lawn while Peter mows it.

Peter said he goes for lots of colour in the garden so there are flower beds, three buckets, hanging baskets, a hanging box, pots and tubs full of impatiens and hanging petunias, geraniums, sunflowers, dahlias, chrysanthemums and giant marigolds.

He starts off the year planting bulbs and grows bedding plants from seeds, attempting to keep the garden colourful at all times. He has a small bed of roses and daisies and a pagoda with climbing roses.

Peter only grows tomatoes and cucumbers in his greenhouse as he is not keen on salads – he says they are for rabbits!
