TRAFFIC wardens in Harborough district could be armed with a new tool in their fight against illegal parkers - head-mounted video cameras.
Harborough District Council parking officers have tried out new 'head cam' technology in Harborough with a view to potentially bringing in the equipment permanently.

Streets around Adam and Eve Street in Harborough, the Commons car park in town, Harborough Train Station and areas in Great Glen were all scoped by the camera.

The cameras could be used as further evidence in disputes over parking tickets as well as capturing footage of motorists who try to drive off while being ticketed.

A spokesman for the council said this week: "The aim was really to test how the attendants got on with the equipment. We have trialled head cameras on parking attendants. They can be useful for catching people dropping litter, letting their dogs foul pavements etc and also to record anyone being abusive."

Councils in Charnwood in Leicestershire and in some London boroughs are already using the cameras, which have lenses about the size of a 10p piece.

The council spokesman said any roll-out would be 'a long way off' as it depends on funding and legal issues surrounding the Data Protection Act.

It would also be reliant on political will within the Tory-controlled council to introduce the measures.

The two days of trials took place about a month ago.
