FOR Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, Thursday's success signalled the culmination of a ten- year, £6 million project to restore the jet to flight.
“It’s the end of the beginning I suppose,” he said. “I’m very proud of the team. It was a thrilling sight to see this large bird take off from the runway. But we now move into a different phase of the project.”
An education programme designed to teach children the history of the bomber and its role in the Cold War will be taken to schools in Lutterworth and beyond and there will be a chance for pupils to visit it at the airfield.
An education manager will start in November and she will liaise with local schools and it will also be part of also be part of schools’ National Science Week in in March. In addition to the education project, it is hoped the show-stopping bomber will entertain crowds at airshows across the country before being retired to a museum in around ten to 15 years.
These projects will cost about £1.6m to operate each year.
