CAMAPIGNERS have said the Govenerment should protect the greenfield land near Great Glen being earmarked as a posible site for an eco-town.
The Leicestershire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England issued a press release on December 27 saying it had written to Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Hazel Blears.
The letter states as follows:
"Dear Ms Blear
s,
Given that the Government's 'Strategic Gap and Green Wedge Policies' report strongly supports the concept of Leicester's Green Wedges', will the stated policy be upheld insofar that any proposal for building on Green Wedge land will have 'a presumption against development' and that there is 'protection of high quality landscape'? An application for Green Belt protection was turned down by a predecessor of yours and therefore protection of the Green Wedges is of utmost importance to the people of Leicester and Leicestershire."
The CPRE press release continues: "So, will The Secretary of State reject the Co-Op/English Partnerships proposal outright or will it go back on its principles?
"Green Wedges are identified as key strategic elements in the East Midlands Regional Plan. The value of this 'green infrastructure' is highlighted in 'The Sustainability Appraisal of the East Midlands Plan' Taking away any of Leicester's Green Wedges will adversely affect the health and heritage of future generations - something our generation will not be thanked for."
