Work on cinema can begin at last

Building work on the Harborough Screen cinema is due to get under way after all the bureaucratic loose ends were finally tied up.
Before the mobile cinema unit can be delivered on to the site, at Symington’s Recreation Ground, there is a significant amount of preparation work that now needs to be done.
This is to be carried out by volunteers and work at the site can now start after permission was finally granted by Harborough District Council.
The preparation for the arrival of the unit will involve the removal of hedging, the installation of CCTV, excavation work and the pouring of the concrete base.
Water and power will also need to be installed to allow it to be fully operational when the mobile unit arrives.
The culmination of all of this activity will see the unit delivered and installed on its new home, off St Mary’s Road.
Currently the mobile unit is being stored at Finch Signs in Raunds, Northants.
Darren Wesby, managing director of Finch Signs, said: “I can’t wait to see the end result.
“Having been part of this from the start, I know all the hard work put in by all concerned will have been worth it.”
The cinema will be placed on the old bowling green on the rec and will have seating capacity for 100 people.
The single-screen cinema will show a mixture of new releases and old movies.
The date for its opening has put back numerous times since the project started but there is a determination to open the cinema sometime this year.
Harborough Youth and Community Trust will be sharing some facilities with Harborough Screen.
Harborough Council, the cinema committee and Harborough Youth and Community Trust all signed a lease for the site in December.
The cinema story started six years ago when Lucy Seaward started a petition to bring a cinema to the town.
It quickly gained momentum and six years on, the project has a number of volunteers and supporters all working towards the goal.
Harborough Screen chairman Marion Lewis said: “The committee, the volunteers and many companies who have offered their services for free have worked tirelessly to raise the funding required to get the cinema project to this stage.”
