Stobart HGV plan gets the green light
HAULAGE giant Stobart has been granted planning permission to create a HGV parking facility at the edge of Magna Park despite opposition from some councillors and residents living nearby.
The firm had been given the nod for the scheme a month ago by Harborough Council’s planning committee – but the application was ‘called in’ by a group of councillors, meaning it had to be debated for a second time on Tuesday evening.
The site, where clothing firm George’s HQ was previously based, will provide HGV parking space for 170 lorries and Stobart says it will allow the firm to better serve customers at Magna Park.
The firm’s claim that it will create about 100 jobs in the Lutterworth area was disputed by councillors at Tuesday’s full council meeting.
They also pointed out that officers had recommended the scheme for approval despite it being contrary to a number of planning policies.
But other councillors said the negative impacts of the scheme were outweighed by the jobs it would create and the economic benefits it would bring.
A motion to refuse the plans fell down by 22 votes to five.
