FOXTON has said a sad farewell to its vicar of 15 years.

The Rev Ian Johnson has been the vicar of St Andrew’s in Foxton, St Helen’s in Gumley and St Luke’s in Laughton since 1996.

He has decided to leave the parish, however, to take up a full-time position as chaplain at Gartree Prison.

For many years Mr Johnson has overseen church services, weddings, baptisms and funerals but he now feels the time has come to focus on a new role.

Mr Johnson has been a stalwart of the community and a gathering was held in Foxton on Sunday so everyone could say goodbye.

The Foxton Society invited everyone to join them at their traditional end of year gathering in the Robert Monk Hall.

It was an occasion which was open to all including those who are not regular church goers.

A farewell presentation was made to Mr Johnson and his wife Caroline who are sad to be leaving but ready for the next challenge.

Before arriving at the party Mr Johnson gave a Combined Beneficaries Service in St Andrew’s which was well attended.

Mr Johnson was initially a teacher but was ordained after serving as a church warden in 1989. His post in Foxton has involved acting as chaplain at Gartree Prison where he will now work full-time.

At the prison Mr Johnson (60) helps prisoners, many of who are serving life sentences. He works to help them with their problems whether they be faith, family, debt, stress or drugs related.

Mr Johnson has three children.
