AN EXCITING improvement plan for Harborough’s Welland Park is expected to take a step closer to fruition on Monday.
The Welland Park Centre Project plans to build a new centre and café in the park for use by visitors as well as community groups.
Earlier this year it secured a £6,500 Big Society grant to produce a feasibility study for the project.
And the executive committee of Harborough District Council, which is partnering the project, will discuss the report during its meeting at the council offices in Adam and Eve Street on Monday.
The next stage will see the council work with the project group to explore options fo the centre before reporting back to the executive with costings.
The project is being run by Harborough Improvement Team in partnership with the Self Unlimited charity, Leicestershire County Council and Harborough District Council.
It came about after Self Unlimited, which runs a café in the park, approached the council to discuss improvements to the facility.
The café is popular but the building is tired and in need of repair.
The feasibility study estimates the café has about 5,000 visitors a month but that doubling its capacity would increase that number to as much as 12,000.
Concept designs drawn up for the project envisage a two-storey, circular building with space for a café as well as function rooms, but the study stresses no design has yet been finalised.
A report prepared for Monday’s meeting states: “An improved café facility will increase the number of people visiting the site and park, and enhance the offer to new and existing park users.
“It will provide a key location to contniue to support vulnerable members of the community such as Self unlimited’s service users, as well as general community members.
“With significant population growth predicted for the town additional resources such as this will meet a growing need.”
