FARMING and the arrival of the Second World War in Britain brought a couple together who have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Now George (91) and Lucy Hill (97), celebrated the anniversary with close friends and family.

The couple have one daughter, Mary Guppie who lives in the Harborough area, and two grandchildren, Lucy and William.

Mrs Guppie said her parents met after her mother, who was an elocution teacher at the time, became a land girl.

She worked on Town End farm in Cotesbach which was next to Hill Farm in Cotesbach where her husband-to-be was working.

Mrs Guppie said the pair met in a field and then married in 1942.

After they married they farmed in Misterton before retiring to Lutterworth in the 1990s.

Mrs Guppie said that common interests have been a key factor in her parents staying together all these years and that they still adore one another today.

The party for their anniversary was held at St Mary’s House where the couple now live.
