A fundraising walk organised by the Squires Effect charity raised £2,000 for Hope Against Cancer.

Children enjoyed tractor rides on the Scarecrow bus thanks to Paul Foxon and Bates Butchers put on hotdogs and burgers for participants.

Kerry Summers also presented the charity with a cheque for £1,333 following the success of a ball in Sheffied featuring Strictly Come Dancing star Flavia Cacace.

Organiser Susie Munton thanked everyone who helped and took part in the event as well as Sir Bruce and Lady Caroline McPhail, who allowed the walk to take part on their estate.

She added: “It went really well. We had more than 100 people there with kids. It was quite windy and cold, which might have put some people off, but we were pleased with the numbers.

“We really loved the walk. It was really picturesque.”

The Squires Effect was set up in Claire Squires’ memory following her death in last year’s London Marathon.

It is trying to raise £20,000 this year for Hope Against Cancer - a Leicestershire-based charity which funds research projects into many cancers including bladder, ovarian, prostate, melanoma, liver, bowel, leukaemia, colorectal and breast cancer together with nursing fellowships relating to patient care.

Cash donated by the Squires Effect will go towards funding a nurse’s wages for one year.

The Squires Effect has already raised £5,000 toward the total this year.
