10 years ago - villagers’ relief as by-pass opened
The Great Glen bypass was opened ten years ago this week by then Transport Minister David Jamieson.
The Mail reported the delight of residents, who reported that the village had been plagued for years by heavy traffic and were looking forward to the return of quieter times.
There was a report on the death of Harborough pensioner Bob Arguile, who had campaigned to improve car parking in Harborough – among other things – over many years.
There were calls to improve safety on the A47 at Billesdon following a fatal accident there. Then Harborough Council leader John Fort led the campaign.
And a burst water pipe in Burnmill Road flooded homes and destroyed a newly-laid patio belonging to John Woodford, of Blenheim Way.
25 YEARS AGO - RED FACED BATHERS CAUSE A SCENE
A funny court story from 25 years ago this week revealed how two young men earned themselves fines from Harborough magistrates after running naked through the town centre.
Their clothes had been stolen by a prankster as they bathed in the canal, reported the Mail.
Parents were being urged to help save the kitchen at Welford School from the axe.
Headmaster Russ Jones appealed for people to lobby Northants County Council in a bid to preserve the facility.
A petition signed by 1,000 people calling for a cinema in Harborough was presented to the district council by the Youth Action Group.
And there were calls to improve safety at the junction of Welland Park and Farndon Road – a campaign which continues today.
50 YEARS AGO - A LUCKY ESCAPE FOR YOUNGSTER
The very dramatic tale of seven-year-old Simon Lofthouse’s miraculous escape after a lorry crashed into the front room of his home in Husbands Bosworth was recounted on the front of the Mail 50 years ago this week.
Simon was sat quietly playing with his Meccano set when the 12-ton lorry, carrying cattle cake, crashed into the house.
Fortunately, young Simon was not injured, and the escapade earned him the day off school.
There was a report of the Fernie Car Club’s Mail Rally, a 120-mile race into south Nottinghamshire via Church Langton and Little Stretton.
It was a tough rally in freezing conditions, won by solo driver Jim Miller.
And success at Crufts for several Harborough-based owners was also highlighted.
