Bid to improve process for naming the fallen on memorial
A NEW group has been set up to explore ways to improve the process of adding names to Lutterworth’s War Memorial.
The town’s memorial, in the Memorial Gardens in Church Street, carries the names of servicemen from the town who have died in conflict.
A new plaque carrying the names of three men who had been missed off the memorial was installed in 2009.
But shortly afterwards a fourth name – that of Sgt Air Gunner Herbert Couling – was put forward by town man Norman Pettit.
Mr Couling was 20 years old when he was killed in a bomber crash during an exercise in 1944.
Lutterworth Town Council is talking to the War Memorial Trust to help them get a new plaque made but it has taken about a year because the plaques are cast, making adding new engravings difficult and the plaques expensive to replace.
Now the council wants to work with the town branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) and St Mary’s Church to come up with an easier way of adding names if needed in future
A group comprising town councillors David Gair, Bill Piper and Ian Staples is holding a meeting on Tuesday with churchwarden Tony Hirons and chairman of the Lutterworth RBL, Dick Stillgoe, to come up with ideas.
The War Memorial Trust has recommended methods such as engraving any additional names into the paving around the Memorial Gardens or on the steps leading up to the memorial itself.
Town council clerk Hannah Surtees said: “It is important that a future method of adding any names is agreed in advance so there is minimal time involved in progressing additional names to completion, in an effort to prevent distress to families.”
