AN OLYMPIC torchbearer opened Tilton-on-the-Hill’s new £46,000 playground after an incredible fundraising effort.

The new facility, which features talking tunnels and a large nest swing along with the more standard swings and slides, is the product of two years’ hard work and determination.

The playground has already proved incredibly popular with children since its informal opening a few weeks ago.

The official opening on Friday was performed by teacher Sue Furlong, who carried the flame through Foxton in July.

Dr Margaret Herrington, secretary of the Playground Appeal Group, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the popularity of it. We’ve been amazed - it has been used all day, every day.”

The group was launched two years ago by a group of mums who wanted to update the ageing playground equipment next to the village hall.

The group secured a £10,000 Lottery grant and about £8,000 from local authorities, with the rest coming from fundraising events organised by the group as well as donations from charitable groups and businesses.

“This team of mums kept going month after month,” said dr Herrington.

“These projects don’t just happen, they require sustained effort from all quarters.”

Dr Herrington thanked everyone who has supported the project.

“I’m not sure all the donors realise the pyschological impact of the money they donate. It has a huge impact and really spurs you on to do the next thing,” she said.
