A CINEMA for Harborough could be here in 2013 after five years of planning and negotiation to make it happen.
The final amendments to the terms of the cinema’s lease were made in a series of meetings in the run up to Christmas.
Harborough District Council, the cinema committee and Harborough Youth and Community Trust have signed the lease for a site next to Symington’s Rec.
Work can start and the cinema can finally become more than just a plan which exists in the dreams of its visionaries.
The cinema will be sited on the old bowling green in Symington’s Rec, and will have seating capacity for 100 people.
A single screen, the cinema will show a mixture of new releases and old movies.
Lucy Seaward started a petition to bring a cinema to Harborough in 2007. From there on in the idea took root in the town.
Her mum, Sandy Seaward who is a volunteer for the project, was there on the day the first sod was cut on the land where the cinema is to be placed.
Also there were committee members, representatives from the youth and community trust, councillors and volunteers Paul Marks of Michael Paul Accountants, Libby Langley from Zest Communications and chairman of the Harborough Screen committee Marion Lewis.
She said: “We are now ready to move the project forward with the in-kind support of local companies such as Michael Lavender Architects, MDA Consulting Ltd of Leicester and Laing O’Rourke who have enabled us to get the necessary building consents.
“The committee, the volunteers and many companies who have offered their services for free have worked tirelessly to raise the funding required to get the cinema project to this stage.”
She said that the project has taken longer than expected.
The date for its opening has been put back several times since the project started.
Work on the site is now to start in early January with a view to opening later this year.
The cinema will share some facilities with the youth and community trust. To keep up to date with the progress of the cinema go to www.facebook.com/HarboroughScreen.
