New £5.9m hospital contractor approved
Plans of how the new Harborough hospital could look which were revealed in January.
A preferred bidder has been put forward to build Harborough’s new £5.9million hospital.
A board meeting of the East Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Group took place this morning (Tuesday) at Harborough Innovation Centre.
Dr Dave Briggs presented a report where he revealed that Kier is the commissioning group’s preferred bidder to build the long-awaited new hospital at the St Luke’s site in Leicester Road, Harborough.
The meeting also heard that the final cost should hit £5.9m and that building work could start as soon as April 22.
All that remains now is for the board’s recommendation to be rubber stamped by the Strategic Health Authority.
The Kier Group, whose head office is based in Sandy, Bedfordshire, is a leading construction, services and property group specialising in building and civil engineering, support services, public and private house building, property development and structured property financing.
According to its website, the group employs more than 10,000 people worldwide and has an annual revenue of £2.1bn.
Cllr Phil Knowles, who was at this morning’s meeting, told the Mail afterwards: “Finally, after 25 years of waiting, we are finally getting there.”
Cllr Phil King, Harborough Council’s ‘health champion and vice chair of the Carers Trust for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, said: “I welcome todays report at the ECCG board meeting from Dr Briggs that the now £6m redevelopment scheme is on track to receive approval from the strategic health authority, with construction to commence on April 22
“This capital injection into the local NHS infrastructure will help to deliver higher standards of care and quality for local residents as well as giving a much needed jolt to the local construction industry.”
