New bin system will save £200,000

IN NOVEMBER, the council will be changing the way it collects household waste to introduce the bin collection service residents told us they wanted.

The new three-bin system will be easier to understand, cheaper to operate and greener in its performance and outcomes.

Plastics will be collected at the kerbside for the first time in the Harborough district – no more trips to “bring banks” or the tip on a Saturday morning!

It will save some £200,000 of your local taxes every year and make better use of the materials collected.

It will also reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Calculations indicate that because of the ease of use of the new three-bin system, we will actually collect more recyclable waste and that has to be wholeheartedly welcomed.

Our residents have already shown they have a huge enthusiasm for recycling.

This enthusiasm has made us the best recyclers in Leicestershire and placed the district in the top ten for recycling nationally. A superb effort I’m sure you’ll agree, but one I believe we can better, under the new scheme to place us even higher up those national rankings.

Food waste will be placed in the black bin rather than a separate container and will be separated out at the depot and recycled as compost, rather than going to landfill.

It demonstrates, I hope, that both efficiency and environmental benefits can go hand in hand.

I feel very proud that we are able to launch this new service with all the benefits it will bring.

Making changes is never easy, but this is a change I believe will be embraced and welcomed by all our residents.

It’s taken a lot of hard work, and some advances in modern recycling technology – but we’ve got there.

We’ve already had some hugely positive responses from the public and I, for one, can’t wait for the new collection service to begin.

You’ll find all the information you need about the new scheme on the council’s website at www.harborough.gov.uk/binchanges
