Moving the Market – Bad Move!

WE have just spent one of our regular short breaks at Market Harborough’s excellent Three Swans Hotel.

We live in Whitstable, so, in one sense, it’s ‘home from home’. Both are friendly, compact towns, with natural beauty around (the sea in Whitstable’s case, unspoilt countryside near Harborough) but the chief resemblance is that they are not ‘clone towns’ – a range of shops in both, and, in Harborough’s case, the indoor Market, and in Whitstable’s, the Harbour fish market, adding to the appeal.

We were dismayed to hear that it’s proposed to move Harborough’s indoor market. The intention may be good – to promote trade in the town – but we fear that if a large retail outlet occupies the current market site it will have the reverse effect and you’ll be on the road to seeing independent shops closing.

Whitstable has one of the highest range of independent traders in its High Street of any town in the country.

We hope Harborough doesn’t go in the opposite direction. ‘Doing nothing is not an option’, a political cliché, is often invoked, but in some cases it is the sensible option. In the case of Harborough’s Market – ‘do nowt or you’ll drive the small shops out.’
