Changing shopping trends over the years

SHOPPING trends over the years was the subject of a talk at Market Harborugh and Rutland Family History Society recently.

It saw speaker Wendy Eccles give an account of how shopping has changed from the early 19th century to now.

At the beginning of the period the workforce was divided between the towns and the villages, Wendy told the meeting.

In the towns, shops were larger and most of the workforce used them.

In the villages, workers from the mills were paid in coupons that often meant they could only shop at the local store.

In 1860 department stores flooded the scene in America, and Britain quickly followed suit with small chain stores.

Finally, self-service and till supermarkets began to appear, leading to the system that we know today, she added.
