A good subject for a mature debate

CONGRATULATIONS to Cllr Michael Rook on the heading “Let’s be mature in Market Hall debate” (Mail, April 5).

It would appear to me that the Market Hall is an asset to the community, providing good local facilities, and employment to many local people, in civilised surroundings.

Cllr Rook’s district council obviously does not agree, maintaining that it is not viable (this from a council that is paying £50,000 plus to run a public lavatory!).

Yes, Cllr Rook, I agree. This is a good subject for a mature debate.

Talking of viability, the Taxpayers Alliance has stated that Market Harborough District Council is now paying eight managers £50,000 plus each per year. This totals some £500,000 plus per year (in addition to this, there will, no doubt, be taxpayer commitment to pensions and, I would imagine, expense accounts).

Can we have a mature public debate on such profligacy, and whether the public would prefer a small proportion of this £1/2 million plus expenditure to assist a local valuable asset such as the Market Hall?

R Hobson,

Rugby Close,

Harborough.
