Letters & Emails
Please give us a bypass
HOW I agree with Nick Lewis re the need for Market Harborough to have a bypass (Letters, April 5).
Did you see the Northern Lights?
SEVENTEEN or 18 years ago, I was living in Naseby and saw the Northern Lights.
Why should political alliances matter for local councillors?
TRADITIONS are fine as long as they still work to the benefit of the community.
Fight for disability rights
I WOULD like to congratulate all the people who protested against the closure of the Market Hall.
No flooding this time
AS a local resident, businessman and, most of all, as an engineer, it gladdened my heart when the rain came pouring down, the rivers swelled, the wettest April in a century was announced and . . . no overflowing drains, no flooding, no chaos in Harborough.
Building team getting on with it
WHEN Harborough next requires roadworks of any description, may we please have the team who are building the new Waitrose store?
Again authority supporting minority
AM I the only person left who still enjoys watching happy dogs running around in the parks?
Selling made easy
I MUST write a thank you letter to Browns Solicitors of Church Street, especially Jackie and Claire, for all their help in selling my mum’s flat.
Bag packing event was well supported
THE Air Training Cadets and everyone at 1084 (Market Harborough) Squadron wish to say a big thank you to the customers of Sainsbsury’s who were so generous on our Good Friday bag packing event. Your support and encouraging comments are very much appreciated.
Spare a thought for blood transfusion service
PLEASE spare a thought for one of our last remaining treasures, namely the Blood Transfusion Service.
Thanks for your support
THANKS are due to the many residents and visitors to the town who have supported the successful campaign to keep the Market Hall open.
Name and shame offenders
I WISH to add my voice to the objections against the proposed new regulations forbidding dogs to run free in certain areas (copy of letter sent to Norman Proudfoot, Harborough District Council).
Traffic lights have appeared
WE now know why the works at the Farndon Road/Coventry Road junction have taken so long.
Angry at proposed dog leash laws
I AM very angry and disappointed about the proposed new laws which will punish all dog owners, not just the irresponsible ones.
Well done Jill
WE would like to congratulate Jill Wormald on her trek across India to raise money for The Brooke (Mail, March 29) and the fantastic amount she raised for them.
No fuss about new houses
WHILE I fully sympathise with the uproar over plans for the Market Hall, I find it surprising that there is not the same level of outrage over the imminent addition of nearly 2,000 houses to Market Harborough.
Where will cooked food waste go?
I SEE in last week’s Mail (April 26) that you are asking for comments on the proposed new system for collecting recycling in Harborough.
Increasing powers to prosecute dog walkers is a big over-reaction
LAST week (April 19) I wrote in very angry at the council’s plan to massively increase its power to prosecute dog walkers over the entire district. But I worried, was I being unfair? Is there a major problem? Had I not noticed the huge packs of ravenous pet dogs making everyone’s life a misery? So I checked.
Thank you for your support
A BIG thank you to Dr Chawla and all his staff at Clarendon House in Kettering for the support and help that they have given me over the last two months, which has not only benefitted me but my family as well.
Irresponsible minority will ignore control orders
AT first I was dismayed . . . and then extremely annoyed, at the narrow-minded thinking behind the proposal of keeping dogs on leads.
Common sense has prevailed
IT appears from your stories that common sense has prevailed in the controversy over the Market Hall.
Responsible owners are dismayed by authority’s attitude towards them
AS a responsible dog owner who enjoys the freedom of our beautiful countryside, town and parks, I am dismayed to read that HDC intend to blanket cover the freedom we have.
Council’s response
IN response to the letter from Mr Hobson in last week’s Mail (‘Let’s have a mature debate on profligate spending by council’), we would like to clarify some of the points raised.
Coucil urged to rethink dog leash laws
I OWN a border collie, who is well- trained. So much so, that he will walk to heel, without a lead, in heavy traffic.
Think ahead to the elections
AS 17,000 people have signed a petition not to move the market outdoors, and feel that any such move would, therefore, be “undemocratic”, they still have an additional and truly democratic trump card.
Council urged to look again at restrictions
FURTHER to the article in last week’s Harborough Mail regarding the proposal by the council to restrict dogs walking without a leash to some public areas, I feel that I should write to protest against some of these restrictions and, therefore, I have a couple of salient points to place before you.
You’re the ones ‘politicking’ Mr Rook
WHEN a politician such as Councillor Rook (his column, April 5) accuses opponents of immature “politicking”, it’s usually a sign of the losing of an argument.
Astounded by council dog walking plans
I WAS astounded to read of the council’s latest scheme to award itself more enforcement powers, this time over the walking of dogs on leads.
1 commentCongratulations on Bottle Kicking coverage
FOR many years, members of my family living in the Hallaton area have mentioned the Easter Monday Bottle Kicking, so I have been aware of this traditional event, but never really knew what it meant.
Well done Medbourne lads
CONGRATULATIONS to Medbourne on winning this year’s Bottle Kicking contest.
Time to educate minority of offenders
HAVING read the write-up in last week’s Harborough Mail, I felt I needed to respond with amazement that a local authority is considering introducing a package of restrictions on the local dog owners.
Let’s have a local election
WE would like to respond to the district council chief executive Anna Graves’ comments in the Harborough Mail of March 29.
Market plans are ill-thought-out
I WAS one of the several hundred local people who attended the open meeting on The Square on Saturday, March 17, in the hope that a representative of the council might take the opportunity to put forward the reasons why our market has to be relocated to an outdoor site.
Minority forcing law-abiding majority to suffer
HERE we go again, the irresponsible minority causing problems for the law-abiding majority.
1 commentHow about kiosks in the market?
WHEN Sainsbury’s built the present market to replace the old market, the council of the day asked for suggestions from the stallholders for the new market.
A good subject for a mature debate
CONGRATULATIONS to Cllr Michael Rook on the heading “Let’s be mature in Market Hall debate” (Mail, April 5).
Market move would cost me
I HAVE had my bookstalls on the market for many years. When I became ill in 2008 and not able to drive, I sold my van and, since then, have travelled between Leicester and Harborough by bus.
