A BRIGHT idea has transformed a Desborough church and its surroundings.

Members of St Giles Church are celebrating the installation of new floodlighting.

The scheme has illuminated the tower of the beautiful 13th century building and transformed the local night sky.

St Giles Church is shared by both Anglicans and Methodists.

Church council member Bill Featherstone said: “Ours is the oldest Anglican and Methodist partnership in the country, over 40 years old, and the symbol of that partnership is the church steeple. So the new floodlighting scheme is very appropriate.”

The installation of the floodlighting has been managed by county practice GSS Architecture, with partner-in-charge Will Assheton working closely with the church council and lighting engineers E7 Contracting Ltd, which is based in Earls Barton.

Mr Assheton said: “We have had to work very closely with the planning department of Kettering Borough Council to ensure that everything was satisfactory, and met all their requirements.

“The new floodlighting makes a real difference to Desborough, and everyone seems to be delighted with the result.”

GSS Architecture has worked at numerous churches in the region on a wide variety of conservation and other building projects.
