Harborough MP appointed to Samaritans’ advisory board
Sir Edward Garnier MP
Harborough MP Sir Edward Garnier has been appointed to the Advisory Board of Samaritans, the confidential emotional support service.
The role is unpaid and involves Edward Garnier providing advice and guidance to the charity’s chief executive, Catherine Johnson, and her management team with his fellow board members who include people with business, accountancy, legal, media, fund raising and political experience.
The board, chaired by Baroness Buscombe, meets three or four times a year in central London.
Samaritans is a national charity and the coordinating body for the 201 Samaritans branches in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, each of which is an independent charitable organisation, plus two non-brick branches (Festival and Correspondence).
Sir Edward said: “I have recently joined the Samaritans Advisory Board which aims to support the charity with its aspirations to ‘Take a lead to reduce suicide’.
“This group of influential individuals spans all walks of life and I am delighted to be able to offer my support to such a great charity.
“I know of the Leicestershire Branch but am delighted to be able to assist the charity nationally. There is plenty of work for Samaritans in this, its 60th anniversary year.”
