HARBOROUGH’s Street Pastors team’s caring, compassionate presence in the town centre has earned it a Pride in Harborough nomination.

The group, launched in April 2009, has been nominated in the Caring in the Community category.

The Street Pastors go out and about in the town centre on Friday evenings, to speak to young people and provide advice and support on drug or alcohol issues, as well as helping those who have fallen or injured themselves while on a night out by caring for them and contacting emergency services.

The Rev Jonnie Parkin and his wife Mel Parkin were behind bringing the scheme to Harborough and the street pastors, in their distinctive blue uniforms, have become a part of the town’s night-life.

It is administered at the moment by the Rev James Shakespeare.

The Rev Parkin said: “I’m really pleased the scheme has been nominated because I think it’s a huge affirmation for the volunteers involved. It’s also a really positive affirmation for the district council and the police who work in partnership with us, as well as the young people in Harborough, who have been very open-minded and welcoming. They’ve shown themselves to be very special young people.”
