Ian: Giving children in Ghana a good education
Ian Burbidge in Ghana
THE organiser behind a small charity providing schooling for several children in Ghana has been nominated for a Pride in Harborough award.
Ian Burbidge (24) of Lubenham, helped to set up the Saltpond Education Project in 2008.
The school in a small fishing community within the town of Saltpond now caters for more than 50 children and has three different teachers.
Students who attend the school are some of the poorest in Ghana and if it were not for the school, which Mr Burbidge helped to set up, they would not have the access to education that they do now.
Mr Burbidge has been nominated for a Pride award in the category of Hard Work and Determination.
Already the school in Ghana provides its pupils with a cooked meal and fresh water every day but the charity plan to do more.
Mr Burbidge has just returned from the school where toilets and fresh running water have now been installed.
On hearing that he was nominated for the award, Mr Burbidge, said: “That’s great. It is all a bit surreal, I’ve just got back from Ghana.”
Through fundraising and hard work both Mr Burbidge and the others behind the project have made the school what it is today.
It is their aim to eventually be able to provide education to all those seeking it in Saltpond, regardless of age.
