Free plant demonstrations to celebrate 30th birthday

A GARDEN centre will celebrate 30 years in business with a party on Easter Sunday, April 8.

The party at Ashby Parva Plant Centre will feature children’s activities including a free Easter egg hunt, birthday cake, a barbecue and planting demonstrations.

There will be a demonstration about hanging baskets at 11am, Alpine containers at 1pm and herb planters at 3pm.

There will be special offers and a raffle for the Air Ambulance.

The centre started life 30 years ago as Ashby Parva Nurseries.

Set up by Ron, Christine and Josie Cobb it had humble beginnings, with just one polytunnel and a wooden box for a till.

Today the centre stocks more than 500 varieties of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants and supplies both the amateur and professional gardener.

Six years ago Ron and Christine’s daughter Michelle Clark took over the retail side of the business, introducing a free planting advice service offering home visits.

The service quickly took off, with Michelle visiting gardens, drawing up plans and even planting when required.

She also made improvements to the general appearance and structure of the garden centre.

A big change came three years ago with the opening of a tea room which serves hot food, soups, snacks, cakes and scones, all made in their kitchen, sourced from local quality ingredients.

Michelle’s role in the business has meant Ron, Christine and Josie have been able to go back to what they loved: growing plants and adding to their ever growing range of plants, including the more unusual.

The party on Easter Sunday will take place at the centre in Ashby Lane, Ashby Parva (LE17 5JD) from 9am to 5pm.

Michelle said: “Join us for a very special day of celebrations as we toast 30 wonderful years of Ashby Parva Plant Centre.”
