HEALTH bosses have finally submitted plans for the new hospital development in Harborough.

The East Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Group (ELR CCG) confirmed its blueprints on Friday for the new site at St Luke’s in Leicester Road.

The new development will see improved services for patients and significant benefits to local healthcare, the trust said in a statement, with the provision of a variety of services on one site in town.

Dr Dave Briggs, the trust’s managing director, said: “The project is moving forwards according to plan and submitting the planning application is an important step for the ELR CCG.

“We are on track to open the unit in 2014. This will bring all health care services for Market Harborough and the surrounding area together on one site.”

The ELR CCG has now placed an order with a conservation architect to draw up plans for the re-siting of the War Memorial, which currently resides at the Cottage Hospital in Coventry Road.

Following discussions with key stakeholders, including the Royal British Legion and the War Memorials Trust, the architects will look at two options - moving the memorial to either the Memorial Gardens or the St Luke’s site, the trust said today.

Once potential designs for a stand-alone structure are produced, the trust will be able to approach planners at Harborough District Council and English Heritage with the proposed locations.

The trust is still committed to seeking the opinion of the people of Harborough, it said, before it proceeds with moving the memorial.

Due to the additional work involved in researching the feasibility of the two options, it is likely this public consultation will now take place in the New Year.
