A RECORD sum was raised to help a village church during this year’s Willey Street Fair.

Hundreds of people attended the event on Saturday and helped contribute towards the huge sum of £2,250, which is being donated to St Leonard’s Church and Willey Village Hall.

Jennie Fletcher, who is one of the organisers, said: “Beautiful weather and a wonderful turnout, with some visitors from France who were ‘enchanted’ by this very traditional village fair held in the bunting-decorated street, helped raise the record sum.

“About 20 soldiers from The Sealed Knot, plus a handful of artisans and womenfolk, made camp in the beautiful garden of one of the oldest cottages in the village.

“They spent the day providing displays of various crafts such as woodwork, embroidery, basket-weaving and shot-making.

“The soldiers were impressive as they marched through the small village. They did a round of firing and many drill displays. The children were especially thrilled by their display.”

The Anker Morris Men and Lutterworth Town Band provided further entertainment, and there were lots more activities including donkey rides, stalls and traditional games, a treasure hunt, face-painting and a pork roast.

Mrs Fletcher said the organisers would like to thank all the sponsors who helped make the day a success.
