A LONG-serving library manager who has spent most of her career helping bookworms in Lutterworth and Broughton Astley celebrated her retirement with a get-together for colleagues past and present.

Val Dunton (64) has been a familiar face at the libraries in Broughton Astley and Lutterworth for a number of years.

Although she does not officially retire until tomorrow (Friday), she was given a send-off on Wednesday last week in Broughton Astley.

Val, who lives in Harborough, said she plans to spend the early part of her retirement doing ‘not a lot’ although she is heavily involved with a swimming club which she says will keep her busy.

She added: “I had a farewell lunch and colleagues of mine came from all over the county so it was very nice to see so many familiar faces.

“I shall very much miss the team I work with.

“We are a close group and I have made a lot of good friends down the years.”

Val said the role of a librarian has changed immensely since she became one in 1988.

She added: “It is so much more than just helping people with books these days.

“The library is as much about being an information and help point for people.

“We also have to do a lot more work on computers and I’ve lost count of the number of training courses I must have been on down the years.”

Val is married to husband Roger, who is a former chairman of Harborough District Council.
