THE DREADED penalty shoot-out settled a number of closely-fought ties in the annual carnival schools' football tournament at the showground.
Organised by Harborough Town FC, the competition attracted ten teams from the area’s primary schools of Little Bowden, Great Bowden, Foxton, Ridgeway, Harborough C of E, St Joseph’s, Farndon Fields, two sides from Havelock Primary of Desborough and Meadowdale.

The teams were split into two leagues and the sides played each other twice in six-minute matches.

The leagues were highly competitive and many of the games were settled by a single goal.

Winners of the two leagues were Ridgeway and Havelock A with the runners-up in each division Little Bowden and Foxton also qualifying for the semi-final stages.

Both semis were decided via spot-kicks with Ridgeway and Little Bowden triumphing in keenly-fought ties.

In the final Ridgeway, which won the title at last year’s carnival, beat Little Bowden 1-0 in extra time to make it two wins in as many years.

Havelock beat Foxton on penalties in the third and fourth-placed play-off match.

The fair play award was won by Great Bowden, which fielded a side of Years 3, 4 and 5 youngsters against mainly Year 6 opposition.

Tim Bale, chairman of Harborough Town FC, said: “It was an excellent event and continues to go from strength to strength each year. The games were very close and played in the right spirit by everyone.”

He thanked the schools, referees, chief organiser Dan Bale, and the Harborough Mail, MDH Sports and Midland Army and Navy store for donating trophies.
