A NUMBER of big bonfire and firework events are due to take place in the area this week (see list below).
Some displays were held last weekend, with more colourful events scheduled between Thursday and Sunday.

* Market Harborough Rugby Club held a display on Sunday night at its ground in Northampton Road.

An estimated 700 people attended the event which was held for the fourth year in a row after being resurrected as an annual event in 2006.

As well as the bonfire and fireworks, there were fairground rides, hot food and candy floss.

Dick Hall, the club's chairman, said: "It went really well and we were really pleased with how it went. The weather was awful earlier in the day, but it cleared up for the evening. The fireworks display was spectacular."

* About 400 people braved the strong winds to watch the display outside Desborough Leisure Centre on Sunday night.

The event was saved from the chop thanks to a last-minute deal with provider 1605 Fireworks.

It was in jeopardy because a May musical evening designed to fund the fireworks was poorly supported.

Guy Fawkes events scheduled from Thursday (Nov 5) include:

* A free display is taking place at Tunnel Ridge in Braybrooke Road, Great Oxendon, from 6pm on Thursday.

There will be a barbecue, beer and food served, a tombola and a guy-making competition (6.30pm).

Food will be served from 6pm, the bonfire starts at 7pm and the fireworks are due to start at 7.15pm.

* Foxton pub The Shoulder of Mutton in Main Street is hosting a fireworks display on Thursday in aid of 1st Foxton Scouts and Foxton Playgroup.

There will be a barbecue and glow wands, sticks and balls on sale for charity. Entry costs £4 (children £2.50) and the bonfire will be lit at 7pm (gates 6pm).

* A charity display is taking place in Stanford Road, Cold Ashby, on Friday from 7pm.

It includes hot food, a bar and all the family are invited. Entry costs £2.50 (children 50p).

It is being organised by the Cold Ashby Charity which raises funds for village causes. Phone 01604 743700 for more details.

* The Langton Arms pub in Main Street, Church Langton, is hosting a display on Friday.

Proceeds will be going towards the air ambulance with the fireworks due to start between 7 and 7.30pm (gates 6.30pm). Entry costs £7 (children free).

* Harborough's oldest display takes place this Saturday at St Joseph's Primary School's playing fields, off Coventry Road. The entrance is opposite the town's cottage hospital.

This year will be the 29th annual event, which is organised by the school's Parent Teacher Association.

Last year it attracted a crowd of 2,000 spectators, despite wet weather, and raised thousands for school funds.

Harborough FM's roadshow will be on hand. Entry costs £5 (children £2, pre-school children free) and gates open at 6.30pm.

* Students at Great Glen-based Stoneygate School have again made the guy for the top of the bonfire at Leicester Racecourse's big charity display in Oadby on Saturday from 5.30pm.

Last year pupils crafted a dragon-themed guy and this year it will resemble a phoenix-from-the-flames.

* The Gliding Centre at Husbands Bosworth Airfield has its event this Saturday.

There will be a bar and barbecue from 6pm, the bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm and the fireworks start at 7.30pm. It is free and there will be a collection for the air ambulance.

* The showground used for the Hollowell Steam Rally will be the site for a big display on Saturday.

There will also be steam engines and vintage vehicles on display, fairground rides, food and a bar.

Entry costs £1 and the fireworks start at 7.30pm (gates 5pm, fire lit at 7pm).

* The Chequers pub in High Street, Swinford, holds its yearly display and bonfire from 6.30pm on Saturday. Food will be available. Entry costs £3 (£2.50 children).
